Farming & Family: The Gilbert's

Today's family hails from Kentucky and I know that Ms. Terry is a BIG Wildcats fan.  She is also on of the sweetest ladies I have had the chance to meet.  She has a deep rooted love for agriculture and enjoys sharing her passion.

1. Who are you and where are you located?
My name is Terry Gilbert and my family farms in Boyle and Mercer Counties in central Kentucky.

2. How did your farm begin?
My husband and I started farming in 1974 when we married. He grew up on a farm.

3. What does your farm produce?
We background feeder calves and  grow and harvest hay to feed them.

4. What is the busiest time of year for your farm?
Our busiest time is from early Spring until December. We start buying calves in the early Spring and continue buying and selling calves until late December when we sell out. Then we take the next 3 months or so easy. Make repairs and work on fences and just catch up. We also harvest hay during these months.

5. How do younger generations help on the farm?
We have 4 grand kids and they all have a calve this year to raise and sell later. Our son and son-in-law farm with us. We rent as well as own land. We will turn around 5,000 calves in a year's time.

6. With all there is to do on a farm, are you involved off the farm?
I am involved in several Farm Bureau positions. AFB Women's Leadership Committee Chair and AFB board. Kentucky Farm Bureau board of directors representing the 8th District. As well as my county Farm Bureau board and Women's Committee. I am also a "retired" registered nurse.

7. What's your favorite activity to do together as a family on the farm?
We have a nice big pond where we love to take our grand kids fishing.

8. Why is family important to your farm?

e are so blessed to be able to farm with our family, it has been so good for all of us. My husband and I are getting older and it is so nice to have the guys to help and to know they will take over someday!

9. What's one thing you want non-farm families to know?
I want them to know how much we care about our animals and work hard to raise quality animals to make good tasting, healthy beef for their families..

10. Do you have a blog, a farm Facebook page, twitter, etc where people can find out more about you and your farm?

We don't have a Farm Facebook page or blog.

(I will tell you that Ms. Terry & Family restored this beautiful old farmhouse and I was privileged to watch the process through her personal Facebook page and it was AMAZING!!)

I hope you enjoyed reading about this Southern farm family!  Be sure to check out all of our featured farm family here!

Until we meet again...may God bless you and keep you!
