Jake & Carolyn Geis, South Dakota
2. How did your farm begin?
Both of us grew up on a farm and both our families have agriculture backgrounds. My great-great-great grandpa Jacob Geis started farming in Ohio in the 1840s and ever since then we've been in agriculture somewhere in the US.
3. What does your farm produce?
Beef cattle
4. What is the busiest time of year for your farm?
Fall with working calves and preg checking. As a veterinarian, we have to work our cattle around everyone else's cattle.
5. How do younger generations help on the farm?
Being the younger generation, we grew up fixing fence and herding cattle. Now we do the same things, but we don't get cookies when we're done with our jobs anymore.
6. With all there is to do on a farm, are you involved off the farm?
We work full-time off the farm. Carolyn is finishing her vet school and I'm a full-time veterinarian. So between our jobs/school and the cattle, we are active in our church and are part of the local trap club.
7. What's your favorite activity to do together as a family on the farm?
Riding horses out to the cabin and camping overnight. Plus hunting pheasants or deer.

8. Why is family important to your farm?
We don't build the farm up for ourselves, but for our family. It is something that will be passed along to us, that we will in turn pass along to our children.

9. What's one thing you want non-farm families to know?
Our family has invested their lives in the farm. The livestock and land are more than property, they are our pride. We have been giving the responsibility of being stewards of these things, and we strive to make sure they receive the best we can offer.
